  18. <p>     Opera, as some young listeners will soon learn, needn't be a
  19. four-hour, popcorn-free ordeal about amorous dwarfs or fallen
  20. minstrels. Kids can thank CARLY SIMON for that. Having reluctantly
  21. attended the opera each week as a child ("Sometimes I'd force
  22. the thermometer to 103 so I could get out of going"), Simon
  23. has now composed a tuned tale even she could sit through. Romulus
  24. Hunt, commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera Guild, deals with
  25. a 12-year-old boy who tries to reunite his divorced parents
  26. via the help of (enter '90s-style multicultural aesthetic) an
  27. imaginary Rastafarian magician friend. Originally planned as
  28. a children's book, Romulus will premiere in New York City next
  29. week.
