- <p> Opera, as some young listeners will soon learn, needn't be a
- four-hour, popcorn-free ordeal about amorous dwarfs or fallen
- minstrels. Kids can thank CARLY SIMON for that. Having reluctantly
- attended the opera each week as a child ("Sometimes I'd force
- the thermometer to 103 so I could get out of going"), Simon
- has now composed a tuned tale even she could sit through. Romulus
- Hunt, commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera Guild, deals with
- a 12-year-old boy who tries to reunite his divorced parents
- via the help of (enter '90s-style multicultural aesthetic) an
- imaginary Rastafarian magician friend. Originally planned as
- a children's book, Romulus will premiere in New York City next
- week.
